Introduction

Marriage is a sacred union between two individuals and a reflection of the relationship between Christ and the Church. As believers, it is our duty to display the gospel of Jesus Christ in our marriages. Here are four ways to do so, along with supporting scriptures:

  1. Love sacrificially: Just as Jesus sacrificially gave himself for us, we should love and serve our spouse sacrificially. This means putting their needs before our own and demonstrating unconditional love, even in difficult circumstances. In 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, it states, "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres."
  2. Forgive as Christ forgives: In marriage, there will be conflicts and hurt feelings. However, it is important to forgive as Christ forgives us. This means letting go of anger, resentment, and bitterness, and choosing to extend grace and forgiveness to our spouse. In Ephesians 4:32, it states, "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you."
  3. Serve one another: Jesus came not to be served but to serve, and we should follow his example in our marriages. This means finding ways to serve and bless our spouse, whether it be through small acts of kindness or taking on household responsibilities. In Philippians 2:3-4, it states, "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others."
  4. Pray together: Prayer is a powerful tool in any relationship, and especially in marriage. By praying together, couples can grow closer to God and each other, and seek guidance and strength for their relationship. In Matthew 18:19-20, it states, "Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them."

Conclusion:

By incorporating these principles into your marriage, you can display the gospel of Jesus Christ and reflect his love to the world. Your marriage can become a powerful testimony of God’s grace and redemption, pointing others towards the hope and truth found in Christ. As you continue to grow in your relationship with the Lord, you will be equipped to love and serve one another with the love of Christ.
