Why Greatness Always Draws Attacks and How Divine Protection Can Save You!

Greatness, in its many forms, often stands as a beacon, drawing attention and scrutiny. Whether it manifests in personal achievements, leadership, or profound spiritual growth, greatness invariably attracts challenges and attacks. This phenomenon isn't new; it’s deeply rooted in human history and Scripture. However, amid these adversities, divine protection remains a vital necessity, offering a safeguard against the onslaughts that accompany greatness.

The Nature of Greatness and Its Challenges

Greatness is not just about fame or wealth; it encompasses moral integrity, spiritual depth, and the impact one has on others. The Bible is replete with stories of individuals whose greatness invited not only admiration but also significant opposition. Consider Joseph, whose dreams and eventual rise to power in Egypt provoked envy and betrayal from his own brothers (Genesis 37). Similarly, King David's rise from shepherd boy to monarch was marked by continuous struggles and threats to his life, even from King Saul, who once loved him (1 Samuel 18-24).

The Apostle Paul also faced relentless opposition due to his mission to spread the Gospel. In 2 Corinthians 11:23-28, Paul recounts his many sufferings, including beatings, shipwrecks, and persecution. These examples underscore a fundamental truth: greatness often attracts challenges and attacks.

Why Greatness Invites Adversity

Several factors explain why greatness tends to draw adversity:

  1. Jealousy and Envy: When individuals achieve greatness, others may feel envious or threatened by their success. This envy can lead to harmful actions or plots against those who are great.
  2. Resistance to Change: Great leaders and innovators often introduce new ideas or practices that disrupt the status quo. Such changes can provoke resistance from those who benefit from maintaining the current system.
  3. Spiritual Warfare: From a biblical perspective, those who pursue greatness, particularly in their spiritual lives, may face spiritual attacks. Ephesians 6:12 reminds believers that their struggle is not against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces of evil.

The Role of Divine Protection

Amid these adversities, divine protection is not just a comforting notion but a crucial reality. The Bible offers numerous assurances of God’s protection for those who trust in Him. Psalms is particularly rich in these promises. For instance, Psalm 91:1-4 says, "Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, 'He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.' Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings, you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart."

Biblical Examples of Divine Protection

  1. Daniel in the Lion's Den: Daniel's faithfulness and greatness in the eyes of God made him a target of jealousy and conspiracy. However, God’s protection was evident when Daniel was thrown into the lion’s den. God shut the mouths of the lions, demonstrating His power to protect His faithful servant (Daniel 6).
  2. Elijah: The prophet Elijah faced severe threats from Queen Jezebel after his victory over the prophets of Baal. Despite his fears and the threats on his life, God provided for Elijah, sending an angel to minister to him and guiding him to safety (1 Kings 19).
  3. Peter in Prison: In the New Testament, Peter’s arrest and imprisonment for preaching the Gospel seemed to be the end for him. However, the church prayed earnestly for him, and an angel of the Lord miraculously freed him from prison, showcasing God’s protective intervention (Acts 12:5-11).

Living Under Divine Protection Today

For believers today, the concept of divine protection remains as relevant as ever. While the challenges may differ in form from those in biblical times, the need for God’s protective hand is constant. Here are ways to seek and embrace divine protection:

  1. Prayer: Constant communication with God through prayer is essential. Philippians 4:6-7 encourages believers to present their requests to God, promising that His peace, which transcends all understanding, will guard their hearts and minds.
  2. Faith and Trust: Trusting in God’s plan and His protection is crucial. Proverbs 3:5-6 advises believers to trust in the Lord with all their hearts and not to lean on their own understanding, assuring that He will make their paths straight.
  3. Scriptural Foundation: Knowing and declaring God’s promises found in Scripture can reinforce one’s sense of security. Verses like Isaiah 41:10, which says, "Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand," provide comfort and assurance.
  4. Community: Being part of a faith community offers mutual support and prayer. The early church exemplified this through their collective prayers and support, especially in times of persecution (Acts 4:23-31).

Conclusion

Greatness, while desirable and honorable, comes with its own set of challenges and attacks. Historical and biblical examples illustrate that those who rise to greatness often face significant opposition. However, the divine protection promised in Scripture provides a vital shield against these adversities. By embracing prayer, faith, a strong scriptural foundation, and community support, believers can navigate the challenges that come with greatness, assured of God’s unwavering protection.
